General questions and special tests:
Do I have German measles (Rubella) immunity?
German measles is one of the few childhood diseases that has serious implications for the unborn baby if the mother contracts it. Rubella immunity is usually obtained through MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) immunisation during childhood or by contracting the viral disease itself. Prospective mothers need to know that they have adequate immunity against German measles. This is achieved by doing a Rubella IgG blood test, IDEALLY BEFORE PREGNANCY. Once a woman is pregnant, we routinely test for German measles immunity but we cannot vaccinate pregnant woman with Rubella, as it might be unsafe. Please contact our office for an appointment if you are trying to fall pregnant hand have not assessed your immunity for German measles.
Am I pregnant?
It is not necessary to do a blood pregnancy test to confirm a positive urine pregnancy test or to determine how far you are pregnant (ultrasound will assist in determining your gestation if your last menstrual date is uncertain). However, this blood test can be done after a urine pregnancy test at home has been unclear. Please contact our office for an appointment if you suspect you are pregnant but unsure how far.
Basic "booking" blood tests:
Booking bloods are the blood tests generally done early in pregnancy and usually include:
- full blood count (to obtain haemoglobin level and platelet count)
- Iron studies
- Blood group and Rhesus status
- infection screen (for HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and German measles immunity).
Dr Hofmeyr prefers combining the booking bloods and first trimester assessment bloods needed at around 10 weeks gestation in order to minimise the number of medical interventions. Please arrange your first pregnancy consultation with Dr Hofmeyr at about 8 - 10 weeks gestation, or at least 4 weeks after your first missed menstruation.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) screening test
It is important to discuss this issue with your gynaecologist before undergoing any tests. No test results will be discussed over the phone or by email, only face-to-face consultations will be appropriate for the discussion of STD test results.
