Bloodtests - request forms for Lancet laboratory
The laboratory request forms below are intended for established clients of Dr F Hofmeyr. All test results will be sent to our office and no copies of results will be sent to the client directly or to any other medical providers without passing through our offices first, to give Dr Hofmeyr an opportunity to discuss the results with the client directly. If you want a copy of the laboratory results after consulting Dr Hofmeyr, please inform us at the time of your scheduled appointment.
Do I have German measles (Rubella) immunity?
German measles is one of the few childhood diseases that has serious implications for the unborn baby if the mother contracts it. Rubella immunity is usually obtained through MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) immunisation during childhood or by contracting the viral disease itself. Prospective mothers need to know that they have adequate immunity against German measles. This is achieved by doing a Rubella IgG blood test, IDEALLY BEFORE PREGNANCY. Once a woman is pregnant, we routinely test for German measles immunity but we cannot vaccinate pregnant woman with Rubella, as it is unsafe. You can download the form below and contact your nearest Metropolis laboratory to assess your immunity for German measles. Results will be sent to Dr Hofmeyr's office and discussed during in rooms consultation.

Am I pregnant?
It is not necessary to do a blood pregnancy test to confirm a positive urine pregnancy test or to determine how far you are pregnant (ultrasound will assist in determining your gestation if your last menstrual date is uncertain). However, this blood test can be done after a urine pregnancy test at home has been unclear. The form below can be used to go to a Metropolis laboratory and do a Quantitative Beta-HcG test.

Basic booking bloods request form
"Booking bloods" are the blood tests routinely done early in pregnancy and include:
- full blood count (to obtain haemoglobin level and platelet count)
- ferritin level (iron stores)
- blood group and Rhesus status
- infection screen (for HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and German measles).
The form below can be used to do these tests at the Metropolis laboratory. Do not do the booking bloods without discussing it with Dr Hofmeyr. We prefer combining the booking bloods and first trimester assessment bloods at around 10 weeks gestation in order to minimise the number of medical interventions.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) screening test
It is important to discuss this issue with your gynaecologist before undergoing any tests. No test results will be discussed over the phone or by email, only face-to-face consultations will be appropriate for the discussion of STD test results.
