Being witness to the miracle of new life entering our world is an absolute privilege! It is a wonder that never ceases to overcome my heart with emotion and praise for our Creator. We believe that it is very important for every expecting parent to have the opportunity to ask ALL questions and discuss their fears in order to know and understand the process and dangers involved in the birthing journey, so that the excitement and eager anticipation will outweigh any negative emotions leading up to this amazing event. Please write down questions and concerns from the first day of this journey and use every opportunity (during consultations or via email) to discuss these with us.

The reality is that pregnancy and birthing does have potential immediate as well as long-term complications for both mom and child. This is why we follow very strict evidence-based protocols in managing your pregnancy and caring for you during delivery according to ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists), RCOG (Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) and South African guidelines. It is very important for us to keep the lines of communication with our clients open, and involve our clients in all decisions regarding the care we provide as far as possible.

Trying to conceive

When contraception is stopped, every woman should prepare her body and mind for the possibility of pregnancy. Whether conception happens immediately or only after a couple of months (or years!) there are certain do's and don'ts that we consider essential information for every prospective parent. Please study the information provided in this link carefully and contact Dr Hofmeyr with any questions (click on the heading or here).

Antenatal care

From the first positive pregnancy test to the day of delivery (and up to 6 weeks after giving birth), we want to support and encourage you, your partner and your unborn baby in good health through appropriate screening and investigations. We believe all pregnancies are precious and would love to share in the excitement and anticipation, but also help you prepare for the arrival of your baby. Please work through our page on antenatal care (Click here) and contact us with any questions or concerns.

Ultrasound in pregnancy

It is an amazing privilege being able to visualise the secret place in which your precious baby is growing through ultrasound. Although it is a wonderful experience to see your baby move and play, and hear his/her heartbeat, we have to use ultrasound examinations wisely in order to minimise unnatural exposure to your unborn baby. Ultrasound examinations are perfectly safe in pregnancy if used in the right context. In our practice we use ultrasound to monitor your baby's growth and development as well as keep an eye on how the placenta is functioning. There are a couple of "special scans" that we recommend each pregnancy undergoes, please read more about those here.
